Oia sunset: bus tour, boat or independently
Updated October 9, 2026 · 4 min read
Oia is where many people head north for the evening, which is exactly why the sunset deserves a plan rather than luck. The featured Top Sights Day Trip with Wine Tasting and Oia Sunset lasts nine hours. Its description names panoramic caldera views, Perissa Beach and the sunset; the wine tasting appears in the title.
Nine hours or five?
The comparison is the Full Island Sunset Tour with Hotel Pickup: five hours covering Red Beach, the Three Bells of Fira, Profitis Ilias Monastery, free time in Oia, the blue domes and the sunset. The longer tour additionally mentions the wine tasting and Perissa Beach. Neither short description says how much free time in Oia remains before sunset, so check the booking page.
From the water
If you would rather watch the sunset at sea, compare a catamaran cruise. The tour with a BBQ dinner lasts five hours and combines the meal on board with swim stops at Red Beach and White Beach. Its description does not list Oia as a stop: you see the cliffs from the water but do not walk through the lanes.
On your own
With a rental car or the public bus you reach Oia earlier and stay longer. The catch is the return trip: after sunset many people leave at the same time, and buses and taxis become scarce. Work out how you will get back before the evening, and allow extra time for the car park or bus stop.
If you want to see a lot in one day and prefer not to drive, the day trip is a good fit. If Oia is your main goal, compare the shorter island tour or travel independently.
