Santorini volcano cruise: Nea Kameni, hot springs and Thirassia
Updated October 9, 2026 · 4 min read
The classic volcanic-islands cruise is Santorini’s simplest way to understand the caldera from water level. The Volcanic Islands Cruise with Hot Springs Visit combines a landing on Nea Kameni, a swim near Palea Kameni and, on longer departures, time by Thirassia. GetYourGuide lists versions lasting 4–10 hours, so the name alone does not tell you how much shore time is included.
What actually happens
Nea Kameni is the active part of the outing: you leave the boat and walk over exposed, uneven volcanic ground towards the crater area. Palea Kameni is a swim stop, not a spa pool. The water is naturally warmer near the springs, but conditions, access and the exact stopping point depend on the boat and weather. Thirassia is the quieter island across the caldera; longer itineraries may allow a meal or a short walk there.
Choose by duration, not by headline
The current Santorini cruise selection starts at €26.25. The featured cruise starts at €31.50, but check the booking page for the chosen date, departure point and any separate volcanic-site charge. A 4-hour option suits travellers mainly interested in the volcano and swim. The longest versions may add transfers or an Oia sunset and can occupy nearly a full day.
Wear shoes with grip, carry water and do not treat the crater walk as a flat promenade. If steep, dusty ground or midday heat is a problem, remain with the boat only when the operator explicitly allows it. The honest choice for limited mobility is a caldera cruise without relying on the Nea Kameni landing.
